Chapter fourteen

“Be right back, sweetie. Don’t go anywhere.”

That was the last thing the man impersonating her husband said as he leaned over to kiss her on the cheek before leaving with her son. The words rang in Samantha’s head like a bell tower, echoing back and forth inside her mind as she lay helpless in bed.

This can’t be happening. Where is Kevin? This can’t be happening. Her thoughts raced from one fear to the next and back again. Fragmented memories flashed in her mind as she gradually remembered more details from the previous night, but anything after dinner was a blank.

She had no recollection of coming upstairs nevermind being strapped to the bed. She pictured her limp body being carried (dragged?) up the stairs to her bed. Although she kept herself in decent shape, she was no toothpick and probably even weighed a few pounds more than Chandler. She imagined him struggling to move her lifeless body while Dylan watched.

As she racked her brain, trying to focus and fill in the missing memories, the pain in her head returned. The dull throb beat in tune with her heart. Thump. Thump. Thump. Whatever Chandler used to drug her sure packed a wallop. She must have been out for at least ten hours. What did Dylan do during all that time? She couldn’t imagine him cooperating for Chandler when Kevin couldn’t even get the boy to bed on his own. The child seemed fine this morning, though. Even with Chandler’s delusions, she didn’t think he would hurt the child. The man just wanted to be accepted and loved, not to hurt anyone. She had to believe that.

Finally, her thoughts settled on something else that had been nagging at her. She tried to ignore the fact that Chandler must have gone through the dresser to find her outfit and changed her clothes while she was unconscious. It was hardly her go-to selection of cotton pajamas; she only broke out this outfit when trying to be sexy for Kevin. Her current mood left her feeling anything but. Chandler could have done anything to her while she was unconscious, and she would never know. She didn’t feel violated, but her whole body still tingled from being drugged and she couldn’t be sure.

Where was Kevin anyway? Although she refused to admit the truth, subconsciously she knew Kevin wouldn’t be coming to save her. Not now or ever. Chandler seemed confident that nothing would interrupt their dinner. She noticed the bloodstains on Chandler’s shirt, even if she refused to come to terms with it at the time. No, not on Chandler’s shirt, on Kevin’s uniform. How else would he be wearing that uniform? Deep down, Samantha knew her husband was dead, but without proof she held out hope. Either way, she couldn’t think about that right now. She had to focus on herself. Waiting around for someone to save her wasn’t an option. If she wanted to get out of this mess, she couldn’t rely on anyone but herself.
